Now that it’s summertime, you are probably thinking about hitting the beach to cool off from the heat. Dita Florence, a Pilate’s instructor, has a few tips to get that beach body you have always wanted. “There are lots of ways to get bikini-ready,” says the 44-year-old mother of three. “They include a combination of healthy diet, exercise and for people like me, new advancements in technology.”

A registered nurse for many years, she found the job to be draining. She discovered mental and physical balance in Pilates and decided to become an instructor. The more exercise she did, the more she was able to tone and strengthen her body - but her tummy remained a trouble spot. “There is no doubt that a strong, fit body gives you the confidence to feel great in a swimsuit, but for me, my abdominal fat was the final frontier.”

Dita heard about a procedure called LipoSonix which uses high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) energy to permanently destroy targeted abdominal fat just beneath the skin, without surgery. Recently launched in Canada, she was an appropriate candidate for treatment and, as part of a clinical study, was one of the first Canadians to receive it.

Initially she was attracted to LipoSonix for the simple fact that it is a noninvasive treatment. “There were no IVs, no anesthetic and no down time for me… I tried it and I am very impressed with the results.” She was advised that after the procedure she could have some bruising, redness, discomfort and swelling. Even though she experienced a little tenderness, she was back to work the next day.

What is so amazing about LipoSonix is that the average waistline reduction, after a single treatment of approximately one hour, is 2.8 cm or about one pant size. Results are typically seen in eight to twelve weeks, which is the time it takes the body to naturally process the disrupted fat tissue. Dita used to wear a size 29-30 jean and now after the treatment she fits comfortably into a size 26-27.

Another big bonus is the cost – the procedure is less expensive than surgical treatment, ranging in cost from $1000 to $2000 depending upon patient needs and the clinic. It is important to remember that LipoSonix is intended for the abdominal area only; it is not intended as a replacement for liposuction surgery or as a way to lose weight. Candidates for the treatment must have sufficient abdominal fat, good overall health, good skin tone and a body mass index (BMI)2 of less than or equal to 30.

“The reason I decided to go public with this is because I work with people on a daily basis and this procedure has really made a world of difference; I look more streamlined and more contoured. I wear really tight clothing all day long - the first impression that I make when someone is hiring me or working with me is what I look like. I work really hard, I eat properly, I exercise and now that I have removed that little problem area, I finally feel that you can see all the work I am doing. I am thrilled with my results.”
