You really shouldn’t “over do” the space to give it that Christmas look and feel. If your timing is tight as the holiday season is creeping up fast, then choose a few simple areas to decorate.
(1) Make a plan of what you would like to do and the find the appropriate items to create that look. Using just two colours in the entire décor can be elegant and beautiful. This year it is all the rage to use a metallic and one other colour, like copper and black, or silver and red or blue.
(2) Make sure that you do something to the front door and entrance to the house. The same planters that you use in the summer months can be filled with pine and evergreen boughs. Add a festive ribbon to the front of it and perhaps a few pine cones throughout and call it a day.
(3) Decorating a Christmas tree can be a huge central feature in one room and it really doesn’t need another thing. Beside that tree can take several hours (and hopefully several bottles of wine with friends and family) - it is an event in and of itself. Adding much else can take away from the beauty of the tree in that room.
(4) Use fresh product like holly and pine and mistletoe to make the house not only smell good but also look great. They will last the full season, there is nothing to store and you can compost and plan fresh next year.
(5) Focus on the main floor. Holiday candles in the main entrance on the hall table, a vase with submerged long needle soft pine sprigs with a beautiful floral arrangement on the dining room table as a centre piece, a tall vase filled with Christmas balls, a poinsettia (if you love them) on the mantle, add some holly to the bathroom arranged around a candle. The bedroom spaces should not be too cluttered as you need the space to make your life run.
(6) If money is tight at this time of year, get creative. Wrap the towels in the bathroom with ribbons for a festive touch, take some small empty boxes and gift wrap the lids and bottoms separately and add ribbon. These are perfect as small touches of Christmas and if someone drops by with a gift that you didn’t put on your list, you can go to the re-gift cupboard and slide something in a pre-wrapped box – Perfect!
(7) Remember that it's all just for a couple of weeks of fun and after that the décor comes down (no later than the second week of Jan.). If you really over do it with tons of glitter and glam, it is difficult to keep yourself from getting that February blah feeling when the days are short, the décor is gone and everything feels grey.
If you follow these few tips you are ensured that you will keep the Jolly in the season and possibly a few extra bucks in your pocket!! Happy Holidays!!!
